Following engagement with the General Dental Council, the Office of the Chief Dental Officer welcomes the introduction of environmental sustainability into The Safe Practitioner: A framework of behaviours and outcomes for dental professional education as an important consideration when providing dental care. The specific changes made by the General Dental Council are addressed in the Consultation Outcome Report.
Bristol Dental School moved to its new location in September 2023. Alongside the move to a new site came a change to the operating model, with direct patient care provided by dental undergraduates now the responsibility of the University of Bristol. This marks a departure from the ‘traditional model’ of hospital-based placements, however students still benefit from exposure to specialist services at the Dental Hospital.
We previously wrote to you about nitrous oxide in our late May edition of this bulletin. We had received concerns following the publication of the UK Government Nitrous oxide: updated harms assessment response to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs on 27 March 2023. The Office of the Chief Dental Officer England maintains that nitrous oxide (N2O) is an effective adjunct for providing dental treatment in appropriate clinical settings. However, as more services across England and the UK look to limit the impact of this medicine, we felt a little more background to this story would be helpful.
